Question
My 2 month old has always been in the habit of pooping very irregularly, sometimes only once in 2 weeks. He hasn't pooped in several days, but doesnt seem to be uncomfortable and eats until he's satisfied. He is gaining fine, but i'm still concerned. His poops are not hard when he does pass them. He has been exclusively breastfed his whole life thus far. any suggestions?

First, congratulations for giving your son the best start in life by breastfeeding him!
I don't see any cause for worry because of your baby's irregular poops! Breastfed babies tend to excrete less waste than formula-fed infants because human milk is digested so completely. It's not uncommon for breastfed babies to go ten days without a bowel movement; two weeks is a little long, but if this is his regular pattern, if he does not have problems passing stool, and if he seems to be eating well, gaining fine, and acting healthy, there doesn't seem any cause for worry. It wouldn't hurt to raise the question with your pediatrician at your son's next check-up, however.

I nursed my 3 daughters and am the grandmother of 5 breastfed children. My book THE COMPLETE BOOK OF BREASTFEEDING (written in consultation with pediatrician Marvin S.
