About Cynthia Morrison Expertise I would be happy to answer questions on breastfeeding relating to the following areas: History of breastfeeding, anatomy of the human breast, physiology of lactation, biochemistry of human milk, immunologic significance of human milk, nursing mom and suckling infant diet, drugs in breast milk, transmission of infectious diseases through breast milk, reproduction during lactation, and the collection and storage of human milk.
Experience I attempted to nurse my first child with little success. I succeeded in nursing my second child and realized the things that went wrong the first time around. Most importantly I learned that experience is always the best teacher.

Breastfeeding - things not to eat while breastfeeding

Question could you send me a list of things to eat and things not to eat while breastfeeding
Answer Hi Sharon,
While breastfeeding, you should follow a normal diet and eat a wide variety of foods including milk, and milk products and eggs. If milk isn't your thing, you should take a B12 supplement (4ug) a calcium supplement (1200mg) and a vitaminD supplement (400IU) daily. If goat or soy milk is drunk, you may not need these supplements. You should select a variety of plant foods, especially nuts, grains, legumes and seeds. You should also use iodized salt. A low salt diet is not reccommended. Meat is also an excellent source of protein. You should eat at least 1800 calories per day. Food to avoid include junk food, sweets, and "empty" calories.
