Breeding and Showing Cats/Persians Cats

Question
We have had a Persian for over 14 years.  My wife and I are buying two
Persians -male and female.  Can they be kept together most of the time or
will they eventually have to kept apart?  We would it be better to neuter the
male? If we want a few litters how does one find a suitable male?

Thank you

Answer
Hi Nicholas

Your best course of action would be to neuter the male.  It may not be too long before he matures and either sprays and/or tries mating the girl.  It will make him much easier to live with and will then be a great companion to your girl and her future kittens.

As to finding a suitable male, your best person to consult is the breeder of your girl.  She should be able to advise you on the best males to complement her pedigree and will have the contacts too.  Failing any help from the breeder you can either visit a cat show and get talking to other Persian owners who will guide you, or approach the breed club in your country for further advice.  You should be able to find their contact details either on the internet or from the registering authority in your country.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.

30 years of continuous cat breeding and showing with two major organisations.
