Breeding and Showing Cats/Breeding

Question
I have been breeding persians for 4 years.  I have 1 male and 2 queens.  Last December, my male got a UTI.  He was cared for and it went away.  My queens have gone in to heat 2 times this year, and they both mated with him.  I'm sure they were successfull matings.  My queens have not become pregnant.  Can a UTI, or the med's prescribed for it make a male sterile?

Answer
Hi Kathy

Normally if the problem has been treated successfully it shouldn't give him any problems as far as his mating girls is concerned.  However, you might like to check that he doesn't have a circle of hair around the top of his penis which may be preventing him actually 'hitting the spot' as that could be a potential problem for him.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.
