Breeding and Showing Cats/Cat pregnancy problems

Question
My cat is pregnant and is due to have her kittens anytime now. She has started bleeding this afternoon and I am afraid something is wrong. It is a light bleeding, not thick, but bright. She seems more affectionate than usually and clingy. I can feel her babies moving around inside her. So is something wrong or is she just starting labor. Thanks for  your time and I look forward to your response.

Answer
Hi Danica

It is not normal if there is blood before labour has started.  However it is not unknown for this to happen even a few days before, but it would  be better to have her checked out by the vet.  It is good that the babies are still moving though.  If it is just a one off show of blood then its probably nothing to worry about, but if its a persistent discharge then I would be concerned.

Are you sure of her dates?

I would be happier for vet involvement in the circumstances.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.
