Question
I was referred to you by the Vetrinarian. My cat had 2 kittens about 29 hours ago. They look a little small but are otherwise healthy. The problem is that I can still feel another baby in there. My cat doesnt seem distressed and is eating and drinking normally.I live in a very small city & there isnt a vet available till Monday. I dont know what to do!! Is this normal?

Answer
Hi Deirdra

Firstly congratulations on the two babies.

If there is another kitten still to come then, hold on for now as long as Mum is happy, as it can take 24/48 hours or some even longer before they finish having kittens.  Do keep a close eye on Mum in case the kitten is dead and she starts to feel ill.

However, sometimes I have thought there is another kitten to come and in the end there is nothing as I think I am feeling the uterus before it has shrunk back.

Take her to see the vet on Monday though to get her checked out.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.

Experience

30 years of continuous cat breeding and showing with two major organisations.
