Question
Dear Marcia,

Hi this is ikram i live in Dubai, I went through a couple of advise you have given for the persian cats. I too have a query.

We have a flat face, long hair persian female cat she is 8 months old now, her colour is very diffrent she has a Brown, Grey, white and Black coat. we would like to get a male companion for her we want your advise on what colour the male has to be to get good kittens?

i am attaching her picture so that you can advise us.

Also how do we know if she is in heat? Please advise us

regards
ikram

Answer
Dear Ikram

It is very difficult to advise on what cat would be best to mate with your girl.  A lot will depend on what is in the background of her pedigree.  However, I would advise that it is best not to get hung up on colours.  You need to find a boy that will complement the features on your cat, i.e. if she has large ears, find a boy with small ears, if she has bad eye colour, find a boy with good eye colour etc.

As for knowing when she is in heat, she will get very affectionate, do a lot of rolling, and making more noise than usual.  When she is actually ready for mating, she will put her back end up in the ear and her tail to one side.   I don't think you will mistake what is happening.  She should not be mated until she is a year old at the earliest even if she does come into heat.

If you want to take up the matter of colours I would suggest you contact Ray Wigley, another of the experts, as that is more his field of expertise.

Marcia.
