Breeding and Showing Cats/Breeding Siamese

Question
After reading previous answers, I'm not sure how one would go about
breeding one's queen, even if she is registered with papers.  I purchased our
cats from a well-qualified breeder, but she would not send me the kittens'
papers till I provided proof of spaying.  How on earth is one to breed a cat in
these circumstances???
This is especially important since there are so few breeders of traditional
Siamese - it is a disappearing breed.

Answer
Dear Julia

When a breeder rears a litter of kittens, she has to decide whether each individual kitten is suitable to breed from and whether it will be an asset to the breed.  Not every kitten is suitable to go forward for breeding and I can only assume that you have a kitten that is a wonderful healthy girl but for some small structural reason the breeder felt should not be bred from.

I would have expected that the breeder would have explained to you when you bought your kitten, that she expected the kitten to be spayed and that you would receive her papers when that had been done and by doing this, she is exercising her right to ensure that only the very best are used for breeding.

It will not be possible to register any kittens from your girl and indeed most stud owners will not accept your girl in for mating to their boys without sight of registration papers.

Should you feel that you do want to breed from your girl then I would go back to the breeder and put your case to her and see if you can persuade her to change her mind and allow you to breed from her by releasing her papers.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.

Experience
