Question

Nala
Around Christmas Time my husband bought me a 3 month old kitten, we already had a boy cat he because we were nursing him back to health after practical starving on our door step. sometime beginning in February my girl cat Nala started calling for a mate about a week later she stopped so we weren't sure if she got pregnant or not. now its April and she doesn't seem to be getting bigger. she still is eating a lot and she hasn't called for a mate at all. I noticed some nipples on her but i figured it was just her body changing as she grow up. her nipples are long and sort of whitish pink. can you tell me if shes pregnant or not because by now she should be about to have them. also could you you try and guess what type of cat she is no one can tell.

Answer
Dear Nicole

Whilst it is is not impossible for your girl to be pregnant, I would have expected her to have put some weight on in the obvious place.  If she is pregnant and nearing a due date then her teats may have a waxy covering over the end of them which you can peel off and you should be starting to feel the milk glands.  If your picture is a recent picture she does not look pregnant.  As for eating a lot, a growing kitten would also be eating a lot.

I would keep an eye on her just in case she is only having one which I would expect her to have had by the end of the month.

Regarding what she is, if she was a pedigree your husband would have been given a pedigree, but if not then I can only guess at Bengal crossed with something.

Marcia

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.
