Question
I took my queen to the vets for an ultrasound at 25 days after mating, as she was showing all the signs of pregnancy, pinking etc.  The ultrasound showed that there were no kittens.  Two weeks on she still has pinking etc and has not had a call.  Could this be a false pregnancy.  Thanks

Answer
Dear Judith

It is possible it is a false pregnancy but also I would have said 25 days was a bit early for a scan.   I would have her scanned again and if nothing is found this time then I would say it is conclusive.

You may just have to be patient and wait for her body to realise she is not pregnant and then mate her again.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.
