Breeding and Showing Cats/Showing a purebreed as household pet?

Question
Hi Marcia, I have a purebreed siberian cat with paperworks. But she is not in the active list so she doesn't have show right. Recently I was considering showing her in our local cat show (held by CCA). But I do not want to switch her pedigree to show pet, because 1) it's just for fun and I don't want to spend extra money or effort on paperworks, and 2) I'm not sure if she is a show quality siberian. So I wonder if I can show her in the household pet group? She is very pretty with rare coloring and sweetest temperment so I think she will win a prize, but I don't know if eligible to show a purebreed as household pet. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Lucia

I'm not sure I can be much help here as I don't know CCA rules.  In the GCCF (UK) and TICA (American organisation but operates worldwide) it would  be permissible to show her as a household pet.  GCCF have Pedigree Pets and she could be entered in the Pedigree Pets section. TICA have Household Pets and don't distinquish as to whether they are moggie or pedigree.  In both cases only the pet name would be used and not the pedigree name.

I think you need to look at the CCA rules to see what they say about their household pet section.

If you want to consider looking into whether she is good enough to show as a Siberian, I would suggest going back to her breeder to find out why she was sold without show rights.  It may be that she is not of sufficient quality and the breeder doesn't want other exhibitors to think she is selling cats for show that are not to standard.

I hope you can get some answers but I am in the UK and not familiar with CCA which has not reached our shores yet.

Regards

Marcia

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.
