Breeding and Showing Cats/Birman cats.

Question
Hi, I really like Birmans, but in my country they seem to be very rare and so expensive.  I mean, 400 euros seems to much for a pet, much more than any Persian.  May I ask you how much are they typically in UK, and what makes them so expensive?  Many thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Patricia

Birmans are lovely cats and I would say that 400 euros is about right for such a cat with a full pedigree. In the UK some breeders would charge £350 as a bottom price and some would be more, probably £400 - 450.

When you buy a pedigree cat you should be buying a kitten that has been with the breeder for around 13 weeks, is fully weaned and socialised and fully vaccinated, with a full pedigree and in the UK, insured for 4 weeks.  The breeder will also normally be there for the life of the cat to give you support and advice.  I think for the initial layout, it is a very good deal.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.

Experience

30 years of continuous cat breeding and showing with two major organisations.
