Breeding and Showing Cats/Overdue Cat

Question
Hi, my friend gave her kittens to me when they were 4mths old and told me that they were spayed and nuetered.  Well it turns out only the male was nuetered and the female wasn't. Anyway, she literally broke my screen door off the track this summer and got out for one day.  I marked the day down. She is definitely pregnant and I can feel the babies moving. She is one year old now and it's been 70 days today, October 10th.  I know that maybe the eggs didn't take on the first day, but I'm worried about what happens if she continues to stay pregnant. Please give me some advice. What happens if I can't afford a c-section?  Thanks!

Answer
Dear Kristina

If your girl got out for one day then you can be pretty sure of your dates.  Normally pregnancy is 65 days though 70 days is not unusual.  However, I really would suggest that you have a vet look at her to check all is well.  The vet will be able to tell you if they are moving down to the birth canal.

As to if she needs a c.section, if she does then there's not a lot you can do except ask the vet if you could pay the bill in instalments.  A lot of vets will do that as it will be an emergency situation.  If she does need a c.section then do ask the vet to spay her at the same time.

Expertise

I can give answers on cat breeding and showing having 'served' over 30 years in this particular field. I head up a Yahoo Group and also a cat club (NBA Cat Club) devoted to educating novices in the correct way to breed, and also show with both GCCF and TICA on a regular basis, and am well versed with the show world, having been involved in the management of the major GCCF Supreme Show in the UK for over 25 years. Genetics however is not my strong point.
