I'm wondering about the actual use of bridal diapers. Is there such a thing, and where would I go to purchase one?

Well, I have to say this is the most unusual question I have ever had, to date!
Nonetheless..the idea of a bride wearing a diaper is very new. Believe me, it is not anything that was ever considered or spoken about when I had my bridal salon, just a few short years ago.
The concept behind this is that the bride's dress may be too complicated to get in/out of in order to allow her to use the washroom.

But let's stop the insanity and think about this for a moment..

You're in a dress.. it has a skirt.. WHY would you not be able to simply lift your skirt (perhaps, worst case scenario, with the help of a few bridesmaids) to go to the washroom when you need to.
The idea of wearing a diaper is not only insane, in my opinion, but unrealistic.
Who wants to smell, literally, like they messed in their pants while they're in their expensive and beautiful wedding gown?

I'm not sure who started this concept or idea.. my research (prompted by your question) lead to some pretty disconcerting sites that I wouldn't put a lot of faith in.

I don't think ANY dress is worth the money spent if you can't go to the washroom like a civilized human, on your wedding day.

As for your inquiry as to where you purchase them, from my understanding, they're simply the adult diapers (Depends or Poise, etc) that your local drugstore carries.

I hope my reply hasn't insulted you in anyway, because that is not my intention at all. In all my professional career in the bridal business, the idea of this is so foreign to me, and goes against all the beauty and feminism of a bride on her day. I really have a hard time with this one. I could not morally sell any client a dress that would force her to wear a diaper, no matter how much profit I could make. Never.
