Bridge & other card games/Bidding

Question
Playing rubber bridge and this is the first hand of the third game.

North leads with 1H
East bids 1S

South holds:
S XX
H A9XX
D QTX
C JTXX

What should South bid? How would you feel about a bid of 4H?

Answer
Hi,

In my opinion the correct bid would be 2H. This accurately describes you hand which is basically a minimum response with heart support. Aside from having 4 card support, your hand does not have much to recommend it...one ace, no kings, no singleton or void.

Bidding 4H would be a gross misrepresentation and overbid. If partner has extra values for his opening bid he certainly has an opportunity to proceed further.

I can answer questions on bidding and on cardplay with the caveat that the former may necessarily involve some subjectivity. I have been playing tournament bridge for over 20 years and I have won several regional tournaments.
