Question
I just want your concurrence on the requirements for an overcall and jump overcall in the cases outlined below:

An opening bid of 1 C:

-may be overcalled by 1 H having 7-17 points and 5 hearts (2 of which are honours).

-may be jump overcalled by 2 H having 6-9 points and 6 H (2 of which are honours).

-may be jump overcalled by 2 H having 13 points and any 6 H.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi,

A 1H overcall shows 7-17 points and 5 or more hearts. This includes hands with 13 points and 6 hearts. A jump overcall is only for weak hands 6-9 points and 6 hearts. Any hand with more than 10 points should not be jump overcalled but should just be treated as a 1H overcall even with 6 hearts.

I can answer questions on bidding and on cardplay with the caveat that the former may necessarily involve some subjectivity. I have been playing tournament bridge for over 20 years and I have won several regional tournaments.
