Britain/United Kingdom/England/Travel from London to Paris

Question
Good morning,

Next July (2009) I have been invited to London for a symposium and wanted to travel to Paris for a few days at the end of the conference and depart for the US from Charles de Gaul airport.

Is the Eurostar the best mode of transportation from the UK to France?

What part of Paris does the train arrive?

Is transportation from the train station to a hotel easy to find?

Last visit to Paris, we stayed in a lovely area (Jewish quarter) but would like to stay closer to main attractions (the Latin quarter?)

Is it easy or difficult to get from the train to the Latin quarter?

Should tickets be purchased in London or ahead of time?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thom

Answer
Hi - thank you for your question.

I'm not sure that Eurostar is the "best" way to get to Paris - it's certainly my favourite and the quickest and I believe it's the easiest, but it's also possible to fly, drive, take a coach or a ferry.

To get the lowest fare, do book in advance at http://www.Eurostar.com but remember, you must travel on the train booked. Doing it this way, you'll save as much as 75% on the "walk up" fare, though.

Eurostar trains travel at 186mph and arrive at Gare du Nord ("North station" in English), which is a huge railway station, served by the Metro, the RER (fast underground train service), many bus routes and a huge taxi rank.

There are many hundreds of hotels within a moments walk, too.

The Latin quarter is 3 or 4 stops on the Metro, or 20 to 30 Euros in a taxi.

Getting to Charles de Gaulle Airport is easy when you leave - the RER runs directly there from central Paris.

Let me know where I can help further, please.

Expertise

As a full time, UK based, travel journalist, I travel almost constantly around the whole of the UK, searching out restaurants, hotels and "must see" places. Visitors for both business and pleasure are welcome to ask questions. I almost always travel by public transport, so questions on rail, air and coach / bus travel are also very welcome. I also regularly write about and use the "Eurostar" rail service between London and Continental Europe - which uses a tunnel under the English Channel - so I am able to help with any questions there, too.
