Question
Hi, I am planing a trip to either Oxfordshire, Cornwell or Devonshire. I will be travelling with my parents who are getting on a bit. I would like to rent a cottage for a week in an area where there is plenty of places to visit and things to see. Can you recommend a town or an area which would suit us ? Something central, so that each day we can do something different. Thanks in advance for any help you can give us.

Answer
Hi - thanks very much for your question.

Firstly, so you know, the counties are Devon (not Devonshire) and Cornwall.

I'm not sure where you are from, or what knowledge you have of these areas, so apologies if you already know some of this!

I also don't know the sort of things that would be of interest to you - modern architecture, seaside resorts, museums, cathedrals, etc.

Although Oxfordshire is close to London, Devon and Cornwall are quite a long way out and you would be undertaking a long drive from all other parts of the UK.

Additionally, almost by definition, cottages tend to be in rural areas, so to find one within a town is difficult.

Please start with these sites, below, and feel free to come back with some more details of your interests and I will be very happy to help you further.

As a full time, UK based, travel journalist, I travel almost constantly around the whole of the UK, searching out restaurants, hotels and "must see" places. Visitors for both business and pleasure are welcome to ask questions. I almost always travel by public transport, so questions on rail, air and coach / bus travel are also very welcome. I also regularly write about and use the "Eurostar" rail service between London and Continental Europe - which uses a tunnel under the English Channel - so I am able to help with any questions there, too.
