Britain/United Kingdom/England/free camp sites

Question
Good Morning Alun,
As we will be spending upwards of 3 months travelling extensively through England Scotland and Wales in a hire mobile home we are looking for free camp sites. I have heard that there is a club, orginization, group that you can join for a fee and recieve a book with free camp sites, on farm land, crown land, forests, etc in it.
Do you know of the club? How much it is? How do I contact and join The club?

Thank you for your assistance

Regards Pauline

Answer
Hi - despite many hours of searching and phone calls to various people, I suspect that there is no such thing - sorry!

The nearest I can get to a discount and help came from the excellent people at the Caravan Club - see their membership benefits page at http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/General/Join Us/Benefits/Benefits.htm

I am reasonably sure that as parking is so expensive here, that anywhere free is unlikely, even in return for any membership.

I am sorry that I cannot offer any further advice, but if you get any more details, do let me know please, as it would be useful for others, of course!

Expertise

As a full time, UK based, travel journalist, I travel almost constantly around the whole of the UK, searching out restaurants, hotels and "must see" places. Visitors for both business and pleasure are welcome to ask questions. I almost always travel by public transport, so questions on rail, air and coach / bus travel are also very welcome. I also regularly write about and use the "Eurostar" rail service between London and Continental Europe - which uses a tunnel under the English Channel - so I am able to help with any questions there, too.
