Question
Hi David, I would like to know the procedure on relocating to England from the United States for good.

I need step by step instruction on what to do and what the costs would be. I know someone in the Manchester area of the UK that would let me stay there. But-- i don't want to just visit on a visa for 6 months, I want to become a citizen because once I leave the US, I cannot come back here since I wouldn't have anywhere to live once i leave the USA.
Please David, fill me in on the exact process I need to do to move to England for good...All I have to move is just clothes and other items that could be fit into suitcases on a flight...Thank you so much!!!

Answer
Hi Jill,

I get this question fairly often even though my main expertise concerns tourism, not residence, in London and the UK.  However, the first issue that you need to consider is whether you are qualified to move to the United Kingdom.  While almost anyone can visit the UK and stay for up to 6 months, there are restrictions on permanent immigration.  If you are a US citizen, here is a website that can answer some questions:

The British government also operates a website with extensive information on immigration to the UK:

I hope this helps you get started.
