AboutEmoor Expertise I have been traveling almost annually in England or Scotland as a tourist for the last 25 years, so I know quite a bit about train travel, car rental, B&Bs, tourist discounts, standard tourist sites, good places to eat, pubs, prices, and things to do off
Question Can you please advise me what would be the least expensive means of getting from the port docks in Southampton to a location in Windsor? There will be 6 adults who will probably have a "fair" amount of luggage. Or if the "least expensive" means of transportation is not the best way, please give me your onion as to what would be the best.
Answer The best way to go for a group that size is by private minivan. There is a service called Air Express which will charge 199 pounds for an eight-passenger minivan from Southampton to Heathrow. Windsor is nearby, so just book to travel to Windsor instead and it should be about the same price. Their primary business is transfer to airports but they will travel anywhere, so you can get portal to portal transfer. (There are other carriers which you can search online.) Here is the Air Express website: www.adlg.co.uk
Taking the train will involve getting you and your luggage to the central station in Southampton, and several train changes, or will involve a train trip into Waterloo Station in London, and then another train out to Windsor, and then transportation to wherever you are going in Windsor. Each person will be paying at least 30-40 pounds for the train alone.
Taxis will take you portal to portal, but you will need at least two taxis or three because of the luggage. Too much cost and hassle for your group.
