Britain/United Kingdom/England/Trip to London w/9year boys

Question
Hello,
I am traveling to London at Easter with 9 year old boys.  We would like to
spend 7 days in London and maybe 3 days in Paris.  I have been doing a lot of
research, but am wondering if you have any itinerary suggestions and what is
the best travel card option while in London ( Oyster, travel card etc). Do the
boys travel free on the system if they are always with me? Also is the London
pass something worthwhile?
We are 1st time visitors to London.  I have been to Paris, but the kids have
not.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Renee,

Let's tackle the most complicated question first--surprisingly that is "best travel card" and children's fares on London public transport.  First, your boys will travel free as long as they are accompanied by an adult who has a ticket, Oyster, or travel card.  Here's the page on the Transport for London website that explains this:

     http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/faresandtickets/1063.aspx

The options for tickets, passes, etc on the bus and underground system are FAR too complicated, in my humble opinion.  But one thing you do not want to do is buy single-trip tickets.  Those are outrageously expensive.  An Oyster card, with the pay-as-you-go option works quite well, but there are also printed Travelcards in various lengths.  All the (overly complex) options are here:

Most visitor attractions are in travel zones 1-2, which is relevant when you decide on which ticket/pass to purchase.

Regarding the London Pass.  You would have to scurry from sight-to-sight at a rapid pace to break even on this pass.  Remember that most museums are free, and other places have reduced fees for children.  The London Pass does get you around some ticket lines, but that's not normally an issue except during crowded summer months.

I love Paris and London both and I think that your split of time might work, although maybe 6 London/4 Paris would do as well.  Your travel days, either at the start/end of your trip, or between London and Paris, are not full sightseeing days, so plan accordingly.  You did not say what your transport arrangements between the cities will be, but the Eurostar is probably the most convenient way to go.

My book might also be helpful Fastest way to get it is via Amazon.com:

Sorry about all the URLs that you will have to cut-and-paste.  AllExperts.com does not let me put links into these answers easily.

I hope this information is helpful.
