Britain/United Kingdom/England/London to Amsterdam travel

Question
Hi Alun, I would like to travel from London to Amsterdam, during the month of Sept. I am based in India and shall be coming for a holiday to London. I was considering an Easy Jet flight and intended to book a ticket online. However the flight leaves from Gatwick. How far is Gatwick from Central London? What is the best way to get there and how much will it cost? Is the destination airport far away from central Amsterdam?

I have been to London once before and have done the Big Bus and Tower of London tour. Where can I go to get a feel of the English Country side? How much time do I need to set aside and cost involved?

I would also like to travel onwards in Europe to Switzerland and Vienna. Would you have any advise on the best way to get there?

Thanks, Ajay

Answer
Hi - Gatwick is approx 20 minutes south of London - you take the train from London Victoria - the fast trains run at least every half hour - 24/7. The cost is approx £17 - less on a slow train.

At Schiphol Amsterdam, the rail station is below the airport - the journey direct to "Amsterdam Centraal Station" is approx 20 minutes and approx 10 euros.

In London, I would suggest you look at one of these tours:

as they will give you a choice of destinations.

For Switzerland and Austria, you can take trains easily, or the European coach network can be fun and cheap:

Let me know where can help further, please.

As a full time, UK based, travel journalist, I travel almost constantly around the whole of the UK, searching out restaurants, hotels and "must see" places. Visitors for both business and pleasure are welcome to ask questions. I almost always travel by public transport, so questions on rail, air and coach / bus travel are also very welcome. I also regularly write about and use the "Eurostar" rail service between London and Continental Europe - which uses a tunnel under the English Channel - so I am able to help with any questions there, too.
