QuestionHello, we are planning to come live in London area for a couple of years. I do not believe the office area will be within our price range, but do you have any suggestions on areas/counties within an hour train ride of downtown London that would be nice for families to live in?
AnswerHi Karen,
Your question is a bit out of my area of expertise (London tourism), but I can suggest some online resources that may be helpful as you plan your move. I am making the assumption that you may be an American relocating to London--if not, then this first section may not apply to you:
http://www.expatfinder.com/
http://expatwomen.blogspot.com
http://www.moving2london.com/
http://www.geocities.com/thetropics/shores/9910/
http://london.fawco.org/
http://www.americanexpats.co.uk/clubs.htm
These are a mix of commercial and non-commercial sites; up-to-date and a bit dated; and perhaps a bit of sexism thrown in (multiple sites for womens groups). I suspect you'll find a wealth of information about the practicalities of living in London from an American viewpoint--including schools and housing. If none of these are helpful, you might want to consider a relocation agency to assist you.
As to where to live, I understand that costs in central London are high, but then commuting into and out of the city every day can get old in a hurry. Although these may be out of your price range, be sure to start by getting information on central London neighborhoods like Notting Hill, Chelsea, or a bit further out in places such as Hampstead. All are in the city, but have lots of green areas, shops, and a mix of residential and commercial locations.
The area south and east of the city, into Kent, is generally quite expensive--home to rock stars and movie idols (at least those who haven't left due to high taxes). I like the Richmond area outside of London--there are good connections into the city and some wonderful areas to live in and visit along the Thames near Richmond.
Again, as a tourism expert, not an estate agent, my knowledge of comparative housing costs is limited, but I hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your move.
