Question
QUESTION: Hi. Can you tell me how long it would take to travel to Dublin and Glasgow from London? Is it possible to take a train to spend the day in those locations if staying in London? Thanks

ANSWER: Hi - Dublin is in Ireland, not the UK, so it is not possible to get there by train - there's a lot of water in the way.

Glasgow is in Scotland and it's almost 5 hours each way on the train.

Each is about 1 hour by plane, but when you add journeys to and from the airports, along with check-in times, there wouldn't be much time left to see the cities - sorry1

QUESTION: Sorry, I thought Ireland was part of the United Kingdom.

Answer
The Republic of Ireland (known as Eire) is not part of the UK, but Northern Ireland is.

However the Ireland (!) is an island of the west coast of England and Wales .... confusing, I know!

There are lots of islands, mostly small, off of our coasts.

Do let me know where I can help further with your visit, please.

Expertise

As a full time, UK based, travel journalist, I travel almost constantly around the whole of the UK, searching out restaurants, hotels and "must see" places. Visitors for both business and pleasure are welcome to ask questions. I almost always travel by public transport, so questions on rail, air and coach / bus travel are also very welcome. I also regularly write about and use the "Eurostar" rail service between London and Continental Europe - which uses a tunnel under the English Channel - so I am able to help with any questions there, too.
