Question
Hello, Michael,I'm an American who is fascinated with Bristol. I would love to visit someday and especially see the church of St. Mary Redcliff. I would love to know if weddings were performed there in the 18th century. Hope you can help! Thanks!

Answer
Hello Jean,

Thank you for your email.
I'm not too familiar with Bristol, but having done a little research, I'd agree that St Mary Redcliff does look well worth a visit.
I'm pleased to say, too, that marriages were indeed performed at the church at least as early as 1754, and almost certainly before that. The Bristol and Avon Family History Society actually has an index of the marriages which took place during this time, and may also be able to furnish you with more information about earlier activity in the church should you wish to contact them.
The information about the records is available on their website, here:

Hope that's useful to you!
Regards
Michael
