Malta"

ANSWER: Hi, Paul.

The short answer you seem to be looking for is "anywhere in the Lake District", which is a short drive from Manchester.

However, December can be very poor for weather, including fog, rain and snow. Many of the local roads could be closed or slow as we approach Christmas - they're very narrow and busy at most times.

You don't say how you are going to travel. Car rental is available at the airport and there's a good train service from there too, getting you almost anywhere in the UK very quickly.

Let me know more details and I'll be happy to help further.

QUESTION: Dear Alun,

sincere thanks for your immediate reply....however I think that i need more information....what villages do you include when you mention the 'the Lake District'?......once we have decided on our destination we shall hopefully go there by train and then hire a car from there....hence can you give us a more specific village town or name please?

sincerely hoping to hear from you soon I thank you in advance.

regards.

Answer
http://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/
is the best website for the area - any of the towns and villages here are outstanding, weather permitting.

I would suggest you look at hiring a car from the Airport, as there's little point in paying a rail fare and then getting a car an hour or so later. For December, you really need to plan where you will be staying, too, as many places will be closed.

I again remind you that the weather could severely restrict what you will see, though.

As a full time, UK based, travel journalist, I travel almost constantly around the whole of the UK, searching out restaurants, hotels and "must see" places. Visitors for both business and pleasure are welcome to ask questions. I almost always travel by public transport, so questions on rail, air and coach / bus travel are also very welcome. I also regularly write about and use the "Eurostar" rail service between London and Continental Europe - which uses a tunnel under the English Channel - so I am able to help with any questions there, too.
