Britain/United Kingdom/England/Oban to London

Question
My boyfriend and I are attending a wedding in Tobermory at the end of July. From there we have 12 days to drive to London. We had planned to travel to Skye, but don't really know much about Scotland at all, so would love some suggestions about where to go in the time we have. In England we would like to spend some time in the Lake District, Bath and Wiltshire (as I have some family connections there). We don't want to spend too much time driving either, so were hoping to stay at just a few places and use them as a base for exploration. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying - I answered within an hour, but may not have pressed the correct "send" button - really sorry!

I would need more details of your budgets and likes / dislikes, please, before I could answer properly.

Also, you say you don't want to spend too much time driving, but even a basic itinerary of this sort will mean around a 1,000 miles of driving.

The UK is quite a crowded island and our roads are especially busy - despite petrol costing around £1.20 a litre.

I trust you have already booked a hire car, with a one way rental included, as this can also be very expensive.

Tobermory is beautiful, but roads in Scotland are largely very slow, so we'd now to allow for this - I would also suggest that you buy a cheap (perhaps 100) satnav when you get here, as that will make your driving on unfamiliar roads much easier.

So, give mean idea of your budget and what sort of things you are interested in and I'll sort a nice route out for you.

Please note that I'm aw(ay filming onday to Friday next week, UK time).

Happy to hlep!

Expertise

As a full time, UK based, travel journalist, I travel almost constantly around the whole of the UK, searching out restaurants, hotels and "must see" places. Visitors for both business and pleasure are welcome to ask questions. I almost always travel by public transport, so questions on rail, air and coach / bus travel are also very welcome. I also regularly write about and use the "Eurostar" rail service between London and Continental Europe - which uses a tunnel under the English Channel - so I am able to help with any questions there, too.
