Britain/United Kingdom/England/England Towns

Question
Hello Graham,

I have dual citizenship with the UK. I currently reside in San Francisco, California. However, as you may possibly know, the cost of living is outrageous here.

I am looking to move to a smaller city in England, and was hoping you may know of a city that is progressive in the arts without the cost of living being outrageous.

I would consider London, but ofcourse, I would be in the same boat then.

Thanks,
Gareth Pitt

Answer
Hi Gareth

Hard to say where you would be better off as the cost of living in the Uk is probably overall not that different to the US and especially San Francisco.

As you know I live in London and although it is expensive still enjoy it. Having travelled in the Uk quite a bit the overall cost of living is not that different except with regard to housing which is less in many other British cities.

The only other towns I would consider living in personally other than London are Brighton and Glasgow. Brighton because it is by the sea and Glasgow becasue it has such a great cultural background.

Maybe you should try making a trip over to see what suits you. Coincidentally I am coming to San Francisco myself at the end of next week!

I have been living in London for the last 20 years so can answer general enquiries relating to the city. I also live near the British Museum so I can answer questions on accomodation in that area. I have also travelled extensively in the US so I can offer advice to Americans coming to London on a cross cultural basis.
