Britain/United Kingdom/England/London at Christmas

Question
My husband and I are planning a trip to London and possibly  Paris over the Christmas holidays with the majority of our time to be spent in London. Which hotels do you recommend and are there any particular sites or activities that we should not miss while in London during Christmas. We plan to arrive either Dec 23rd or 24th. I appreciate any information or suggestions on the best way to enjoy London at Christmas.  Also do the shop hours change during the holdiays?  Thank you again for your assistance. plt

Answer
Dear Peggy

Well I'm not really sure what to say here as I don't think I would actually recommend coming to either place at Christmas as a visitor in a hotel.

Both cities close down completely from Christmas Eve till December 26th and living in the centre of London I have seen lots of tourists wandering trying to find things to do over that period. All the museums, shops, theatres, cinemas and restaurants close over that time too. And there is NO public transport..

So I would personally recommend coming either later or earlier if you want to get the most of the cities...

I have been living in London for the last 20 years so can answer general enquiries relating to the city. I also live near the British Museum so I can answer questions on accomodation in that area. I have also travelled extensively in the US so I can offer advice to Americans coming to London on a cross cultural basis.
