Britain/United Kingdom/England/Moving to UK

Question
Hi Graham,
I'm 18 and planning on going to University there and I saw that I would be able to pay the same as UK citizens if I lived there for three years first. So now I'm planning on living there and getting a job at a Sainsbury's or something if they'd hire me. But I don't really know where to begin. I'm not sure what kind of visa to get, how to get a job there before I arrive, or how long it might take to make all the arrangements. I was hoping on moving there sometime next fall. Do you think that's at all likely? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, I'm really overwhelmed at the moment. Thanks!

Answer
Dear Lauren

I Think it would be easier to come over on a student work exchange programme but I am not sure that would count towards residency. I think that will be the problem - if you do not come over legitimately to start with then your residency will not count towards the three year rule.

I would check options that way and also look on the British Government honme office website and see if they have any suggestions.

I have been living in London for the last 20 years so can answer general enquiries relating to the city. I also live near the British Museum so I can answer questions on accomodation in that area. I have also travelled extensively in the US so I can offer advice to Americans coming to London on a cross cultural basis.
