Britain/United Kingdom/England/TRANSPORTATION

Question
Hello.
I need to get from London (possibly Heathrow) to Leicester without a car. I will be traveling from the US later this month. What transportation options do I have to go to Leicester from London (i.e. train, bus, TUBE, taxi, etc.) that is probably the least expensive. I don't know much of how the UK works in terms of transportation. Thank you. BJ

Answer
Dear BJ

You can travel by train from St Pancras in cenral London to Leicester. To get from Heathrow to central London you can take the Picadilly tube line into the centre and change at Oxford Circus to the northbound Victoria line which will take you to Kings Cross/St Pancras. (Both stations are on one tube stop) the train takes around 1.5 hours

You can also take a bus National Express 230 from Heathrow Airport or Gatwick Airport - if you look on the National Express Coaches website there seems to be several that go direct but they take around 3 hours and the single fare I saw was £30.00!

Most of the coaches go into London first then go to Leicester... so not very quick or cheap...

Taxi would be very expensive...

Hope this helps - let me know..

I have been living in London for the last 20 years so can answer general enquiries relating to the city. I also live near the British Museum so I can answer questions on accomodation in that area. I have also travelled extensively in the US so I can offer advice to Americans coming to London on a cross cultural basis.
