I have been traveling almost annually in England or Scotland as a tourist for the last 25 years, so I know quite a bit about train travel, car rental, B&Bs, tourist discounts, standard tourist sites, good places to eat, pubs, prices, and things to do off

Britain/United Kingdom/England - re: tourist discounts - london/ pubs

Question
Hello, I will be in London December 25 & 26 and again January 5 & 6.  Looking for some discounts on sites.  London Eye (I see oyster card offers b1g1 free -- but I don't understand the oyster card program and all transportation sites seem overwhelming to me).  Any suggestions on sites not to miss, pubs with economical prices would be nice.  Will be staying by Kings Cross at Alhambra Hotel.  Thank you.

Answer
The oyster card is a plastic "credit card" that gets validated or topped up with money credit and can be used on buses and the underground. Generally the best deal for short-time stays in London is not the oyster card, but instead a day pass for zones 1 and 2.  Both of these items are purchased from the ticket window in any major tube station; just go up to the window and ask.  They can also sell tickets to, say, Tower of London or London Eye, so you avoid lines to buy those tickets on-site.

Pubs are fairly consistent on prices; try a nearby pub recommended by your hotel.  Some of my favorite pubs in London are: George's Inn Yard just off Borough High Street south of London Bridge, Anchor Bankside near Shakespeare's Globe on the south bank of The River Thames, and Cittie of Yorke in Holborn Street.
