Question
i am asking a question about the symbolisem of the glove to Queen Elizabeth in the painting called Peace Portrait .can you help
P.S i sent you two of these forget the first one

Answer
Hello Bec,

There are a couple of portraits known as The Peace Portrait, only one of which shows the Queen holding a glove.  Other portraits show her holding many things:  fans, jewels, feathers, etc.  These were symbols of majesty; i.e., things only those of a certain station could afford.  Note that a glove being worn has a different meaning than a glove being held.  Taken at its face value, "the gloves are off" means ready for a tough fight.  Showing the iron fist not sheathed in the velvet glove is also a very strong warning to your enemies and potential enemies.

Ultimately, it is suggestive of power used readily and without reservation.

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
