British History/Nineteenth century restaurants

Question
Hi.  Another social history question, I'm afraid. Can you give me an example of a famous, very expensive restaurant in London in 1850?

Answer
Hello Elizabeth.
Surprisingly there were very few, if any. Food was served in hotels or inns, restaurants only really appeared from the 1860s onwards. Hotels were small, but there were many inns. Wealthy people tended to eat in their club, men only of course, women in hotels.

I have a good basic knowledge of British political history, but my speciality is the Kings and Queens of England and Scotland from 927 AD. Please no social history questions, it's not my strong point and I'm unlikely to answer them.
