British History/Is my old family Bible rare?
Expert: Mark Smith - 8/4/2008
QuestionI have handed down to me by my grandparents a black leather bound King James Version with "reddish" edges - printed in Great Britain one of only 20,000, an edition of the Holy Bible in PICA BOLD TYPE,OCTAVO SIZE. It DIFFERS from the one named "Dan" you responded to as described above, as well as, this ones 2nd page, and the fact that on the 3rd page it has a DEDICATION TO THE MOST HIGH AND MIGHTY PRINCE, JAMES, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING OF GREAT BRITAIN, FRANCE, AND IRELAND, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH, Etc. The Translators of the Bible with Grace, Mercy, and Peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Great and manifold.... the DEDICATION is a page and a half. It speaks of Queen Elizabeth... talks about Christendom, goes on about infinite arguments... also say's "we have great hopes that the CHURCH OF ENGLAND shall reap good fruit thereby,we hold it our duty to offer it to Your Majesty, not only as to our King and Sovereign, but as to the principal mover and author of the Work; ....also talks about ill-meaning and discontented persons, it may receive .... say's two times about malign us,..."whom they desire still to keep in ignorance and darkness;... "integrity"... The last paragraph reads: "The Lord of Heaven and earth bless Your Majesty with many and happy days; that, as his Heavenly hand hath enriched Your Highness with many singular and extraordinary graces, so You may be the wonder of the world in this latter age for happiness and true felicity, to the honour of that great God,and the good of his Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord and only Saviour. Keep in mind I stated partical sentences and left most all of the DEDICATION out here.say's: LICENCE In terms of the Letters Patent granted by Her late Majesty Queen Victoria to Her Printers for Scotland, and of the Instructions issued by Her said Majesty in council, dated Eleventh July, Eighteen Hundred and thirty-nine, I hereby License and Authorise Messrs.William Collins Sons and Company Limited, One Hundred and Forty-four Cathedral Street, Glasgow, to Print and Publish, as by the Authority of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, an Edition of the Holy Bible in Pica Bold type, octavo size, to consist of Twenty Thousand copies as proposed in their Declaration dated the twenty-fourth day of April, Nineteen Hundred and Fiftyeight, the terms and conditions of the said Instructions being always and in all points fully complied with and observed by the said William Collins Sons and Company Limited. Dated at London the Eleventh day of June, Nineteen Hundred and Fiftyeight. W.R. MILLIGAN, Lord Advocate Grateful for your time, Diana
AnswerHello Diana. It's only 50 years old, and Bibles are the most commonly reprinted books, so I doubt if it's worth very much. My advice to you, and anyone else with such a book, is to take it to an antiquarian bookseller for a professional valuation.
