British History/Edward I

Question
Hello Mark.

I've been trying to find out (given it is known at all) who was the religious figure who crowned Edward I.

I presume it would have been whoever was the Roman Catholic cardinal at the time. (Surely it was not the pope himself?)

It may be you are more in a position to help me find the answer than to give it to me, directly, but whatever you can do will be greatly appreciated.

regards,
Dan

Answer
Hello Dan.
Edward I was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 19 August 1274 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Kilwardby.
The coronation of English Monarchs is carried out by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The only exceptions being if he was unavailable, as in the case of Henry III or the seat was vacant through the death of the Archbishop, as with Elizabeth I.
