Question
What is the most powerful empire?

Answer
Hello Henry,

Well, as you know these things go in cycles.  Right now, there is an argument to be made that the American Empire is strongest now, though having an Empire is antithetical to American beliefs (hence the argument).  Going back in history, you have the British Empire, the Empire of Japan, German Empire, Spanish Empire, Holy Roman Empire, and then stretching all the way back to the Roman Empire.

My vote for most powerful of these would be the British Empire, as it lasted hundreds of years, encompassed 1/4 of the globe, and instilled its values and language on scores of billions of people.  Its impact can be felt today.

Sincerely,

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
