Question
what types of institutions were around during the english renaissance?

Answer
This is a very broad answer Katie, but essentially there were two:  the Church and the Monarchy.  Beyond that, there was little government as we understand it today, and little time for anything else.  With an overwhelmingly rural populace, Britain and Britons had little to do but find their next meal and fight for the king in France.  The Church was still, at that time, considered to be headquartered in Rome.

This is a subject with many more aspects to it than this, but you will need the guidance of a good reference librarian to help you.  Ask for histories of England during the 15th & 16th centuries.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
