Question
Could you tell me how long it would take for someone to travel from England to Calcutta by steamship in the mid 1880s?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Jane.
About a month via the Suez Canal. Unless you wanted specifically to go to Calcutta and the north east of India you would disembark at the first port of call - Bombay, from where the rail network would take you almost anywhere in the country. Bomabay could be reached in three weeks in the 1880s.
