Question
Signet Ring
Signet Ring
I am in possession of a family heirloom signet ring.  The inscription reads James 1st England to Aaron Gilman, Charles G. Ayres.  Can you tell me what such rings may have been for and what the relationship may have been?

Answer
Hello James.
I can only guess at this, but the ring does not look very old, certainly not from the reign of King James I 1603-25. Also Aaron was a name rarely used back then and it was unheard of for people, other than Royaly, to have two Christian names, so Charles G Ayres would not have been someone around in the early 17th century.
Best to take it to a jewellers and they will give you a more accurate date for it.
