British History/Admiral devoured by crabs

Question
Hello Joseph,

Thank you for your replies so far.

Unfortunately I don't remember the newspaper, as I was a child at that time. Moreover, I lived in Romania then, so this would make the search even more difficult.

All I remember is that it was a single sentence in that trivia thing about this, "did you know that Admiral... (maybe Sir Francis Drake - it was a name that sounded similar to this construction, that's why I also mentioned Clarke)... died devourde by crabs?"

Oh, I remember that it said as a title 'Funny or not so funny deaths". Yes, it was the unusual thing about it, 'cause I remember reading in the same article about another personality who died of laughter.

So if it is Sir Francis Drake, I know he was buried at sea in a lead coffin, which would make it rather difficult for crabs to protrude, unles he was buried alive and managed somehow to crack open that coffin (made of lead...).

Anything yuo might come up with is just welcome.

Thank you very much.

Gabriel

Answer
Hi Gabriel,

I'm afraid I've hit a wall, and cannot find a specific answer to your question.  I have many resources available to me, yet the identification of the admiral has eluded me.

I enjoyed our correspondence, and hope that you visit AllExperts again soon.

Sincerely,

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
