British History/The Globe Theater

Question
What can you tell me about the original Globe Theater's architecture and why that made it so special and anything else that made the Globe special?

Answer
Hi Natasha,

This is a bit outside my area, so I'll do something that I normally do not like doing and that is to refer you to two Web sites.  The first is the home page of the theater itself; the second is an architectural site:

http://www.shakespeares-globe.org/

http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Globe_Theater.html

I don't know where you live, but I would go to the library and see if these books are available:

"Shakespeare's Theatre" by Thomson, Peter
London ; New York : Routledge, 1992.

"The Globe Restored: a study of the Elizabethan theatre" by Hodges, C. Walter
London, Toronto [etc.] Oxford U.P., 1968.

"The Globe Playhouse: its design and equipment" by Adams, John Cranford, New York, Barnes & Noble, 1961.

As I said, this is outside my area, so I hope sending you to more authoritative references is helpful to you.  Perhaps AllExperts has an architect expert if these prove to be not what you had in mind.

Thanks very much for your question.

Sincerely,

Joseph Logue

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
