Question
Henery gave a necklace to one of his women, the motto on it was in latin,  it said in english "property of the king". What did it say in latin and who did he give it too?

Answer
Hi Greg,

I have tried many of my sources, but I could not find an answer for you.  I have a dim memory of hearing the story before, especially as to Anne Boleyn.  I believe it was prompted by the rumors of Anne having an active love life by the time she caught the king's eye.

As for the Latin, not one of my strong suits despite three years of study, I've tried some online translating services and can only come up with bad Latin.  In the answer business that's worse than no answer.  Sorry I couldn't have been of more help.

You might give your local library a call and ask the Reference Librarian for assistance.  They are invaluable and more than happy to help.

Come back soon!

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
