Question
I have a simple question. What was the population of London in 1632?

Answer
Hi Jeremy,

Since an official census of the United Kingdom did not occur until 1801, figures are a bit hazy.  The best estimate for London in the 1630s is roughly 600,000.  This was, of course, before the Civil Wars of the 1640s and '50s, the Great Plague of 1665, and the Great Fire of 1666.  By the end of the century, the population had risen back to that level.

Thanks for visiting AllExperts, Jeremy, and come back soon.

Sincerely,

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
