Question
Dear Mr. Smith,

Did queen Elizabeth 1st spend any time in France or Italy in her younger days (pre- or post her accession to the throne) as part of her general education?

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Barry J. Fenton

Answer
Hello Barry.
Sorry to be so long answering your follow up question about the Treaty of Cateau Cambresis, but I only found out how to do it by logging on to my own page on Allexperts, which I rarely do. The best way to ask another question is click on the "follow up" button rather than asking it on the comments page.
The peace negotiations opened in October 1558 at the Abbey of Cambrai in northern France, but later moved to Cateau Cambresis in February 1559. The English delegation was made up of just three, who no doubt had taken instruction from Elizabeth and her Ministers on what line to take. But the Queen played no direct part in the negotations herself. England's role was relatively minor, it was mostly a Franco-Spanish conference.
