British History/Queen Elizabeth I

Question
I heard on "Jeopardy" tonight that Queen Elizabeth I changed the distance of a mile from 5,000 ft. to the present measurement.  Why did she do that?

Answer
Hi Linda,

I'm sorry it took so long for me to get back, and though I think this is a little outside my area I did some research and found a good answer here:

http://www.sizes.com/units/mile.htm

I used Google and entered the term in this fashion:  "elizabeth I" 5000 mile      Make sure you use the quotation marks.

Again, apologies for taking so long, and not being able to provide an answer myself.   This site looks like it will help.

Best wishes and come back soon,

Expertise

I am knowledgeable about English history from about 1400 to 1688, and then from the reign of Victoria (after 1837). I have a particular interest in the monarchy and dynastic relations of Europe from 1800 onwards. I cannot answer questions regarding the latter Stuarts, the early Hanovers, and the politics of the 18th century.
