British Theatre/re: american musical submission for british theatres (correction)
Expert: FRANCIS LYNCH - 2/12/2009
QuestionLet me try this again with your correct name! I have a friend named Francis Quinn and my fingers acted quicker than my brain processed.
"Dear Francis Lynch: I am an American playwright-lyricist who has co-written a full-length musical which recently had a successful production just outside of Seattle. My collaborator and I are both very interested in submitting this play for consideration to British theatres because of its subject matter (it relates a story from English royal history in the High Middle Ages). We therefore believe that the musical would be quite well received in Great Britain and are wondering the following: First, are there any good resource directories of British theatres that might contain individual theatres' submission policies? Second, would you know theatres that might be especially interested in a medieval, English-themed, and traditionally-styled musical? Thank you (again) so very much for your time!"
AnswerDear Colin,
There is a U.K. directory of all the producing houses, Producers and regional theatres, it's called 'Contacts' a helpful guide with all the necessary adresses you need.
The National Theatre, the R.S.C. and most of the big Repertoire companies all have Literary departments who accept submissions, might as well start with the big guns.
One regional theatre; The Royal Exchange in Manchester (It's in-the-Round). have produced new musicals in their recent history and also have a new writing competition. They are definately worth contacting. website:
