Question
when did buddhism gain its followers???

Answer
Hello Hannah,
Please bear in mind that Buddhism is not a religion. One is a Buddhist when one lives according to the historical Buddha's Four Noble Truths: 1) that there is suffering, 2) that the suffering is due to our grasping and clinging, 3) that if you overcome this thirst, you will do away with suffering, and 4) that to achieve this you should follow the Middle Way (the Noble Eightfold Path).
