Buddhists/Visiting a Buddhist Temple

Question
I wonder if you could help me.  I am due to visit the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon with my husband on Monday as a celebration of our 3rd Wedding Anniversary.  I was hoping to receive a blessing for our marriage to continue to be strong and blessed but dont know if this is an acceptable thing to ask.

Although I am Roman Catholic, I have had an interest in Buddhism for some time and would love to learn more about it but am also very wary of causing any offence when visiting the Temple.  I know that shoes need to be removed when entering the temple but I would like to bring some offerings for them but dont know what to bring so any advice you could offer would be most greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards

Anne

Answer
Hi Anne,

Congratulations on your 3rd wedding anniversary.  (Ours will be 33rd!!)

Welcome to the path of peace and contentment.

I just did a search and found that
"Wat Buddhapadipa in London was the first Buddhist temple in the United Kingdom".

You need not have to bring anything to the temple, aspecially you are just visiting.  Monks give blessings by reciting (chanting) the Buddha's discourses (suttas).

It is important that you inform the monks(s) that you are new to the religion but would like to request his blessing for your 3rd wedding anniversary.  If you are not used to kneeling, before the monks start the chanting, please ask for permission to sit cross legged stating your reason. This is very important, for you will not be able to withstand the pain in the kneeling position for the duration of the chanting.  Remember always clasp both hands in front of your chest as respect for the monks. Once done, you can then free your hands.  The normal "salutation" is to kneel and bow three times; but you don't have to do that as you won't be able to do it properly if haven't done it before.

After the blessing, you can inform the monk that you wish to make a donation.  I am sure he will direct you to the donation box.

Have a nice time, and relax.

Smile from justinchoo :-)
